In this edition of “WHAT’S IN YOUR TAPE DECK,” I talked to Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman, integral members of Prince’s longtime backing band The Revolution, about Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, and the seductive powers of a mix tape.
ERIC: You’ve known each other for a while.
WENDY: I’ve known Lisa since I was two.
ERIC: When you were kids, would you exchange records with each other?
WENDY: Lisa was four years older than me. And she was closer to my brother at the time. They did more record-sharing. I hadn’t amassed a large record collection at that point, I was still very young. It wasn’t until 1980 when Lisa and I were exchanging records all the time. All… the… time.
ERIC: It’s such a great way to have a conversation.
WENDY: We were part of the generation that made mix tapes for the people you loved.
