The Secret, Never-Before-Heard Tenacious D Love Song Can Finally Be Revealed
Is it the greatest love song in the world? Or is it just a tribute?
It’s the summer of 2006. I’m at the restaurant in the Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood, sitting at an outside booth with Jack Black and Kyle Gass. They don’t have guitars, but they’re still being loudly (and hilariously) crude.
My little recorder sits in the middle of the table, trying to capture the action. I’m trying to listen while simultaneously preparing for my next question and also worrying that they’re going to order another round of appetizers because I’m a freelancer with exactly $600 in my bank account and I’m still expected to pick up the tab because I’m interviewing them for Playboy.
Then Jack bursts into song. An original song, prompted by one of my questions. I can safely say such a thing has never happened to me before and hasn’t happened since. And I captured it all on my tiny tape recorder. Where it’s remained… until today.
The rest of this story, I’m afraid, is only for my paid subscribers. It’s not you, it’s me. Seriously, I’m that broke. It’s been almost 17 years and I’m still paying off that Chateau Marmont tab. Upgrade today to hear the song that’s destined to become a future lo-fi classic.
